If you’ve ever been told “you need to ice it” then this is the perfect remedy. It fits just about any body part, and does a great job of either icing your joint pain/bruises or heating it up. I was given the opportunity to write an impartial, honest review in exchange for a discount code for the strap, and you can see my thoughts below and in the video!
When you suffer from any sort of trauma, like a sprain, overuse or a mild tear in a muscle then you’re often told to use the R.I.C.E method of treatment. This stands for “Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation”. These straps help you do all 4 at once, and as a Physio I really do recommend them to sports teams to have on the sidelines, or for home use to reduce swelling and inflammation.
In the video I’ll wrap it around my ankle so you can see how it works. The general idea is that you strap it around the body part that has suffered the strain and leave it there for up to 2 hours. The pack stays cool for longer than anything else I’ve used – it’s a treat to use.
Because the Velcro strapping is very strong, you can use these under your clothing if you want to ice a repeated injury or even over the top of an item of clothing because the pack is waterproof.
If you need to loosen up your muscles before exercise, or even just to aid mobility, then you can use this to gain some extra mobility quite easily. Basically, you place the gel pack in the microwave for 10 seconds. Then open and test the temperature, if it’s hot enough take it out, otherwise add another 10 seconds. Once you get to a comfortable, warm temperature, then you place the gel pack in the sleeve and place it around the joint.
Though I don’t use the heat pack, I’ve been told that it’s a really really nice feeling, and if anybody reading this suffers from aches and pains that need to be warmed up first – think of this as a hot water bottle that can strap around your injured body part. Really nice feeling.
Pro’s and Con’s
+ It’s cheap, and there isn’t really a substitute that can do it as well. I would advise against getting cheaper gel inserts because if they don’t contain the Glycerol they will only last at the cold/hot temperatures for half the time, which defeats the point.
+ Very Versatile, can be used for all number of injuries (Head, Neck, Shoulders, Elbow, Wrist, Waist (up to 36 inches), Groin, Knees (PERFECTLY), Ankles (PERFECTLY).
- The strap needs to be longer to comfortably fit around somebodies back. What you end up doing is lying on it, or leaning on it whilst sat up to target the back. This isn’t really a problem for smaller people, but if you’re more than 36 inches then it’s not going to fit. Generally it will fit around the lower back easily though.
