Here’s a very common question Dr. Debbie Thompson Sun City AZ chiropractor gets is “Should I use ice or heat for pain relief?” http://www.DrDebbieThompson.com +1(623)321-5141
You will hear many different expert opinions on this question. Dr. Debbie answers this question based on her personal & chiropractic clinical experiences since 1993.
Would you use ice or heat on a sprained ankle? Here’s a hint: Do you want to decrease or increase inflammation & swelling? If you heat up your sprained ankle it will blowup like a balloon & get very hot. The total opposite of what you want.
Ice or cryotherapy shrinks or vasoconstricts your blood vessels which then pushes the extra fluid from the swelling out of the area. Ice cools down inflammation. Apply this same rule to acute injuries to your neck, shoulder, back, leg pain, muscle spasms in back, muscle aches, sore muscles or any other newly injured area.
General Rule: Ice is for injuries & heat is for muscle spasms & knots or trigger points.
QUESTION: “How long does each ice or heat treatment last?” Ice or heat treatments maximize their results at 10-15 minutes. Beyond that your body’s physiology will sense an abnormal temperature change. A protective response will reverse what your initial treatment goal was. You can treat with ice OR heat as frequently as every hour on the hour until you get the results you want.
Always remember that no matter what you hear always base your final decision on what feels best to you.
CAUTION: If you have numbness or tingling or you know you have decreased sensation in the area you are icing or heating do this with caution. Make sure there is always at least a t-shirt layer of material between your skin & the treatment pack.
Another great way to use ice AND heat to break your pain cycle is to alternate back & forth… one right after the other until you get the results you want. Take a break every 30 minutes to allow your body temperature to return to normal. You can start another cycle after that.
QUESTION: “I love my heating pad… it feels so good when I’m laying on it. Can I use it?” Your heating pad may feel comforting, but it will not give you the break in your pain cycle that you are aiming for. The electromagnetic activity of a heating pad can interrupt you normal electromagnetic field. Keeping your nerve flow normal, vital and clear is very important in your healing process.
I prefer a hot pack that heats up in the microwave for deep moist heat.
QUESTION: “Can I use ice for my old chronic pain?” I am someone who favors ice on my low back pain no matter if I have had an injury or my muscles ache. I do not like ice on my neck at any time because I can feel myself tensing up.
Take this one for a test drive. Ice offers an amazing pain relief and it will break a pain cycle really well unless you start to tense up… then you will end up spasming more. In this case do not use ice.
